Skiing from October to May
Sölden
In the Ötztal ski paradise for early starters, endurance athletes and après-ski fans, winter lasts for three whole seasons. Sölden is in a league of its own: on the glacier slopes, skiers can carve their first turns as early as September. A month later, the fun really gets going at the “First Snow Glacier Opening” in mid-October, at the AUDI FIS Ski World Cup opening at the end of October and then on almost every autumn, winter and spring weekend until early May.
Glacier ski area
On the two glaciers high above the ski village in the upper Ötztal, the white season begins as early as the beginning of September, when the forests and meadows down in the valley are just starting to glow in the most beautiful yellow, rust and red autumn colours. The highest panoramic road in the Eastern Alps takes skiers and snowboarders by car or bus from Sölden to the Tiefenbach and Rettenbach glaciers, one of the largest glacier ski areas in Austria. The two ice giants are linked by a road tunnel and a ski tunnel to form the only glacier ski circuit in the Alps. 36 km of slopes and 10 lifts with a capacity of almost 20,000 people per hour guarantee endless skiing fun for beginners and experts alike.
Ski area
In November, the remaining lifts in Sölden and Hochsölden open in addition to the glacier lifts. For skiers and snowboarders this means exhilarating runs on 148 km of slopes for all abilities and stress-free transport without waiting times on 35 lifts. And guaranteed snow from October to May – the ski area ranges from 1,350 to 3,340 metres above sea level, and around 80 per cent of the slopes are covered by snowmaking.
